Who Should Take This Course?

The 10 hour General Industry Outreach Training Program is a intended to provide a non-supervisory role employee an exceptionally broad awareness on recognizing and preventing hazards at their site.

This training course is for any professional who works within an industry OTHER THAN construction. Some examples include manufacturing, distribution, logistics, health care, schools, universities, transportation and others. Our course is designed to outline the various regulations set up by OSHA and to enable safety leaders and workers in their overall safety knowledge for their respective workplaces.

Once you have completed the course, you’ll earn the Department of Labor OSHA Wallet Card showing that you have been credited with the 10 credit hours. This course is Nationally accepted by OSHA and meets the latest OSHA standards.

Employers who have trained their workers with the OSHA Outreach Program for Construction have seen reductions of up to 66% in lost-time injuries. This 10-hour general industry safety course is the online version of that successful program and is intended to provide instruction on a variety of general industrial safety and health standards. The course includes material included in OSHA 29 CFR 1910.

Course topics include: Introduction to OSHA, Identifying safety and health problems in the workplace, How to File an OSHA Complaint, Your Rights as a Whistleblower, Walking-Working Surfaces, Workplace Fires and Emergencies, Electrical Safety, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hazard Communication, Permit-Required Confined Spaces, Lockout/Tagout, Forklift Safety.

This course requires a minimum of 10 hours of online training. OSHA limits all Outreach Training to a maximum of 7.5 Hours of training per day. As a result, all 10 hour courses must be taken over a minimum of two days. Outreach Training Programs are limited to students within the U.S. Jurisdiction (the 50 states and certain U.S. Territories). All 10 hour courses must be completed within 180 days from the start of the course including submitting a course survey. Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to print your interim course Completion Certificate as proof of your completion, with the official card Department of Labor card sent to you in approximately 4-6 weeks. The OSHA 10 Hour General Industry Online Course is divided into sections that are presented interactively. To successfully complete the course and earn your DOL OSHA completion card, you must pass the lesson exams at the end of each section and a final exam covering all content topics with a score of at least 70% on each. You will have three chances to pass each exam. If you are not 100% satisfied with your purchase you may be issued either a full refund or an exchange of equal-value product(s) for any online training course(s) that are unused (i.e., have not been started) in full up to 30 days after the date of purchase. In 2016, Mississippi-based lumber company, Hankins Lumber, had an incident where one of its employees was performing routine maintenance on a gang saw and became entangled with a rotating shaft, was pinned against the equipment, and subsequently died from injuries sustained in that accident.

This incident spurred an OHSA investigation which yielded 15 violations and over $80,000 in fines. Among those violations was a failure to provide adequate guarding for the various working parts of the gang saw, a failure to install a safety-latch for a hoist hook in the equipment, and a failure to institute safety procedures for emergency shutdown with machinery.

This incident is a good example of why general industry training is so crucial. Because of multiple safety failures in the workplace, a man lost his life. And, in the process, the company was processed with multiple violations and several thousands of dollars in fines. The injured worker was found unconscious by his co-workers, some time after the incident, and died in the hospital. A proper procedure for tag-out/lock-down could have proved the difference between life and death.

Why are General Industry Safety Practices Important?

OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is an agency of the United States Department of Labor. The agency was established under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which was passed under former U.S. President, Richard Nixon, in December of 1970. OSHA officially formed in April of 1971.
