In 2016, Mississippi-based lumber company, Hankins Lumber, had an incident where one of its employees was performing routine maintenance on a gang saw and became entangled with a rotating shaft, was pinned against the equipment, and subsequently died from injuries sustained in that accident.

This incident spurred an OHSA investigation which yielded 15 violations and over $80,000 in fines. Among those violations was a failure to provide adequate guarding for the various working parts of the gang saw, a failure to install a safety-latch for a hoist hook in the equipment, and a failure to institute safety procedures for emergency shutdown with machinery.

This incident is a good example of why general industry training is so crucial. Because of multiple safety failures in the workplace, a man lost his life. And, in the process, the company was processed with multiple violations and several thousands of dollars in fines. The injured worker was found unconscious by his co-workers, some time after the incident, and died in the hospital. A proper procedure for tag-out/lock-down could have proved the difference between life and death.

Why are General Industry Safety Practices Important?

OSHA, or the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, is an agency of the United States Department of Labor. The agency was established under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which was passed under former U.S. President, Richard Nixon, in December of 1970. OSHA officially formed in April of 1971. From the outset, the agency’s mission has been to assure safe and healthful working conditions for men and women by setting and enforcing standards and by providing training, outreach, education, and assistance. OSHA is also charged with enforcing a variety of whistleblower statutes and regulations. The agency has shown an ability to reduce the rates and costs of injury in the workplace.

Today, OSHA plays a major role in protecting company owners and employees. An important function of the agency is to raise awareness, not only in the industrial sector, but in the public at large, as to what the responsibility of the company and individual is to ensure safety and compliance in the workplace. OSHA also plays a critical part in protecting the rights of the individual employee to speak up about any way in which they or the company may be in danger or non-compliant.

Our General Industry Training Course addresses crucial entry-level regulations and safe-practices. This information provides an opportunity for safety leaders and employees to keep themselves, their co-workers, and their respective communities safer.
