Who is the Man Behind the Amazing Alaïa?
Alaïa is a brand that was founded by a Tunisian-born designer Azzedine Alaïa. Azzedine Alaïa took the fashion industry by storm in the 1980s with his amazing couture creations and shoe designs. This high profile designer was raised by a middle-status family. His parents raised their kids with their small family business of wheat farming. Ever since his young years, he already has an eye on glam fashion. A friend of his mom was very fond of him and his fascination on fashion. His mom’s friend regularly gives him copies of high fashion magazines such as Vogue which introduced him to clothing proportions, volume and sculptures. Because of his solid interest in fashion, he managed to get himself in a prestigious arts school in Tunis. There he studied sculpture and the beauty of human form. He sustained his studies through working as a dressmaker in a local store. One thing is for sure, he really is determined to pursue his calling for fashion and all of his sacrifices paid off since then.
Azzedine Alaïa moved to Paris right after he finished his studies. He also had his years of humble beginnings but his talent was already very evident since then. His future in fashion was very predictable. He worked with globally renowned brands such as Christian Dior, Guy Laroche and Thierry Mugler. He gained years of experience and through time, his expertise and confidence built up. He wowed everyone with his very first collection in 1980. Since then, everyone in the fashion industry looks forward to each release of his collections. His success was very persistent as years went by. After 4 years of founding his very own label, he already garnered numerous noble awards such as the 1984’s Best Designer of the Year by the French Ministry of Culture during the Oscars de la Mode. In 1988, he opened his very first flagship boutiques in major cities in Paris. He was quite known back then as “The King of Cling” because of his very sensual, very sexy and very appealing style. The industry aggressively embraced Azzedine Alaïa’s identity and many fashion icons, world-class artists and big TV personalities have been and are still devoted to his craftsmanship.
The Death of Alaïa’s Founder
At the age of 77, Azzedine Alaïa died in Paris because of a heart failure. His death left many colleagues, acquaintances and fans mourning. But his death did not affect the Maison in any way because until now, Alaïa is still one of the most sought after brands.
