A soggy Monday morning will not stop the Wichita Ice Center for helping a fallen sheriff’s deputy.

The owners of the Wichita Thunder – Rodney Steven II, Brandon Steven and Johnny Steven – are raising money to help the family of Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Kunze. Proceeds from ticket sales for the hockey team’s opening weekend will go to the deputy’s family.

Kunze was shot and killed on Sept. 16. In the final moments of his life, he saved the lives of at least two innocent bystanders. Kunze is survived by his wife and daughter.

“To have something tragic like that happen here in Wichita, where all of us live, it touches all of our hearts," said Rodney Steven. “This is such a great opportunity for us to give back and we're going to stay up here for the next couple of days until we fill up the upper two bowls for the two games we have Friday and Saturday night. So, we have almost 10,000 tickets to sell in the next two days, and we're going to stay up here and raise at least $50,000 for the Kunze family.”

They surpassed that goal Monday afternoon.

All net proceeds from upper bowl ticket purchases will go to deputy Kunze’s family.
