Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw signals a bold new direction for the long-running Hollywood franchise. Not only is it the first of several planned Fast & Furious spin-off films, but it also introduces a supernatural element.

Just when you thought the franchise couldn't get any more far-fetched, the first trailer showed Idris Elba playing a "genetically-modified" bad guy who looked like they belonged in a Marvel movie. The series began as a street-racing rip-off of Point Break. Now it features a bullet-proof supervillain who can run down the sides of buildings.

Thankfully, the franchise hasn't forgotten about its roots, as there will still be plenty of automotive action for gearheads to enjoy. The trailer showed a McLaren 720S sliding under two semis and The Rock causing carnage in an armored eight-wheeled truck. It also looks like the Jeep Gladiator will feature in the film, as the tough truck was spotted by a Jeep Gladiator Forum member during filming on Hawaiian island of Kauai.

A couple of Gladiators were seen strapped to a flatbed trailer with steel rims and Gobi paint, but it isn't known what role they will play in the film. Chances are they will be used in an off-road chase scene to show off their capability, judging by the mud caked into the wheel arches.

While nothing official has been announced yet, featuring the Jeep Gladiator makes sense since the franchise has an on-going relationship with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which led to the Dodge Demon making its cinematic debut in Fate of the Furious. A modified Jeep Wrangler Unlimited JK also featured in Furious 7.
