Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Not all tooth pain indicates the need for root canal treatment. However, signs that you might need root canal treatment include:

  • Tooth pain and sensitivity to hot and/or cold that persists
  • Tooth pain when eating or as pressure is applied to the area
  • Darkening of the tooth
  • Swelling of the surrounding gum tissue (can include a bump on the gum)
  • No symptoms at all

why might i need a root canal?

A root canal is required when the pulp becomes inflamed or diseased. This is usually caused by trauma/injury to the tooth (even if damage is not visible), a cracked/broken tooth or deep cavity. Root canal treatment is a straightforward procedure that generally involves little to no discomfort. Failure to remove infected pulp will ultimately require extraction and subsequent loss of the tooth— so it’s vital to take action as soon as possible by making an appointment for a dental exam.

Treatment typically takes from 1 to 3 visits. The pulp in the affected tooth is removed and the area is thoroughly cleaned, then sealed. Depending on the condition of the affected tooth, a dental crown or composite resin bonding is used to restore the tooth to proper cosmetic form and function.
