Elder Care

The majority of senior citizens will someday need help with their activities of living. According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the figure is right around 70 percent. Medicare will pay for convalescent care after an injury or illness if the patient is expected to recover. However, it will not pay for the custodial care that is provided in nursing homes and assisted living communities.

Long-term care facilities are extremely expensive, so in-home elder care can be a viable solution. Though Medicare will not pay for this type of care if it is considered to be custodial, there is a potential financial solution. Medicaid will pay for long-term care in an external facility, and a portion of the program will cover in-home care. Since it is intended for people with limited resources, there are income and asset parameters, but many people can obtain eligibility.
